President's Message...What a great time to be an information sharing practitioner!
Maury Mitchell, JISPnet.org President
President Obama's new administration is setting a progressive tone by embracing technology at remarkable levels for government operations. His strategy is to leverage technology to make government work better. Historically, the general approach of government has been to adapt new technologies to our practice of government. In many cases, the result was simply automating poor practices. His apparent philosophy is to reinvent government by taking advantage of the power of technology.

He is already introducing web 2.0 (social computing) concepts into the federal government and is forcing integration by many former stovepipe systems. Further, agencies across the federal landscape are opening up not only to the public, but also to each other, making much more information readily available.

This approach to open government, new integrations between previously closed systems, and adoption of new concepts in information sharing is opportunity for you to expand your agency's technology footprint. I encourage you to pause and take note of the project or initiative with which you are currently involved. Are you simply applying technology, or are you invigorating better government?

To assist us on this path, President Obama is also helping our nation's criminal justice enterprise with unprecedented amounts of new grant funding. Opportunity abounds for you to apply for a funding stream to assist your state, local, or tribal effort. I cannot begin to touch on all the options but know that if you have a good idea and a well structured application, you have a great chance at success.

We are posting information on the JISP website as fast and often as we can about any new opportunities. I also encourage you to check out the information at NCJA.org as they have some of the best insight into many of the federal grants available to you.

Switching gears, I'd like to comment on the JISP Monthly Beacon Webinar Series. This is a new direction for JISP as we try to instill diverse methods of sharing and collaboration with practitioners. We have already had two fairly successful webinars. Granted, the first one wasn't without its bumps but the feedback has been wonderful. You will find more information inside the April 2009 newsletter. I encourage you to participate. Not only is it a good opportunity to learn about national initiatives, it also allows you to interact with your fellow practitioners. If you have any suggestions for topics or have thought of other ways you'd like to see JISP grow, please let me know.

Thanks to all, and keep up the good work!
